Holiday Hazards For Pets

With every holiday we like to share a few pet safety tips. We know we probably sound like a broken record, but pet safety should always be top of mind! Just this week, we spoke with the staff at the Veterinary Urgent Care in Plymouth and VCA Animal Hospital in Weymouth: they both reported that they have had quite a few intakes of dogs or cats ingesting foreign or toxic items, such as bones, fabric, plants and Christmas ornaments.

Check out our Holiday Hazard list below.

During the holidays, many pet parents may choose to include their furry friends in the festivities. But, it's important to keep your pet's safety top of mind. For any holiday you may be celebrating, here's a few tips to keep in mind!

Holiday Greens

Pine needles, mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias all pose serious health hazards for pets. If ingested, they can cause stomach problems and make pets very sick.

Delicious Dangers

We recommend sticking to your pets normal diet. With the temptations of all the delicious foods and treats, many festive dishes contain toxic ingredients for pets. Poultry and pork bones, or cooked bones of any kind are strictly forbidden. They can splinter into shards that can cause choking and serious damage to the pet's mouth, throat, or intestines.

Ornaments & Decor

With its sparkle and shine, tinsel is an attractive object for many pets. Be mindful of this and any ornaments or decor that are in reach and could be easily broken or ingested by pets.

String Lights

Decorative lights can cause burns or shocks if a curious pet chews the electrical cord. Be cautious of any wires or batteries when decking your halls.

Presents & Gifts

While you may not be able to see the contents of a wrapped gift, pets will be able to smell it. Be sure to keep wrapped food or candy off the ground and out of paws reach!

Alcohol

If your celebrations include alcoholic beverages, be careful not to leave drinks unattended where pets can get to them.

From all of us here at Helping Hands, we want to wish you Happy Howlidays!
