Spring into Action for Pet Health!

Last week, we celebrated Canine Fitness Month by sharing tips to keep our furry friends active and healthy. But staying fit isn’t just about exercise—it’s about overall wellness! This week, we’re back with even more pet health tips, because April also highlights Heartworm Awareness, Pet First Aid, and Lyme Disease Prevention—three crucial aspects of your pet’s well-being that deserve our attention.

Let’s work together to keep our pets safe, happy, and healthy!

Protect Those Precious Hearts!

Did you know that one little mosquito bite could put your pet at risk for heartworm disease? This serious condition affects dogs (and sometimes cats), leading to heart failure, lung disease, and even death if left untreated. The good news? Prevention is simple and effective! A monthly preventative can keep your pet protected all year long.

Be Your Pet’s Hero!

Accidents happen—but being prepared can make all the difference. Here are some essential first-aid tips for pet parents:

Build a Pet First Aid Kit: Stock up on gauze, non-stick bandages, antiseptic wipes, hydrogen peroxide (only for poison emergencies, as directed by a vet), tweezers (for tick or splinter removal), and your vet’s contact information.

Know the Signs of an Emergency: Heavy bleeding, difficulty breathing, unconsciousness, or symptoms of poisoning (vomiting, seizures, excessive drooling) require immediate vet attention. Keep the phone numbers and addresses of your closest urgent care and emergency veterinary clinics handy, perhaps in the “Favorites” section of your phone.

Perform Basic Pet CPR: If your pet is unresponsive and not breathing, knowing how to perform CPR can save their life!

The American Red Cross offers an online Cat & Dog First Aid course, including CPR training. Check out their website to learn more!

Handle Injuries with Care: If your pet is hurt, stay calm! Even the gentlest pets may react out of fear or pain. Use a towel or blanket for safe transport if necessary. Know where your cat or dog carrier is and keep it easily accessible to grab quickly if needed.

Be Prepared for Common Issues: Choking, heatstroke, broken nails, and minor cuts can happen anytime. Keep a cool, damp towel handy for overheating, and learn basic wound care.

Tick-Tock, It’s Tick Season!

Springtime means more outdoor fun—but it also means more ticks! These pesky parasites can transmit Lyme disease, a bacterial infection that causes fever, joint pain, fatigue, and even kidney damage in dogs. You can help prevent it with the right precautions!

Use Year-Round Flea & Tick Preventatives: Ticks can stay active even in cooler months, so it’s important to use a monthly preventative all year long. Consult your vet to determine the best protection for your pet.

Perform Daily Tick Checks: After walks or playtime, check your pet’s toes, ears, belly, and under their collar for any unwanted hitchhikers.

Remove Ticks Safely: Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to the skin and pull straight out. Clean the area with antiseptic.

Vaccination May Be an Option: Some dogs may benefit from the Lyme disease vaccine. Talk to your vet to see if it’s right for your pup.

Watch for Symptoms: If your dog starts limping, acting tired, or losing their appetite, call your vet. Early antibiotics can prevent serious complications.

Help Us Protect More Pets!

Preventatives like Simparica Trio or NexGard can cost around $30 per month per pet—and many pet owners in our community struggle to afford this crucial protection. Your donation can make a difference.

$30 provides one month of flea and tick prevention for 1 pet

$60 helps 2 pets stay protected for a month

$180 ensures a pet is protected for an entire 6 months

$360 provides a full year of protection for 1 pet

Every dollar counts in the fight against preventable diseases like Lyme and heartworm. Your donation provides a local pet in need with essential preventative care they might otherwise go without. Donate today and help us keep pets safe, healthy, and protected!
