April is Canine Fitness Month!
Spring has sprung, and April is officially Canine Fitness Month! As the weather (slowly) warms up, it’s the perfect time to get outside, stretch those legs, and keep your furry friends active. Whether it’s a brisk walk or a game of fetch, regular exercise is essential to keeping dogs at a healthy weight, improving their mobility, and even reducing behavioral issues.
But fitness isn’t just about movement—it’s about overall well-being, and that includes preventive healthcare like spaying and neutering. Spaying and neutering not only help control the pet population but also prevent serious health issues, including pyometra, a life-threatening uterine infection in female dogs.
Just recently, Plymouth Helping Hands for Animals stepped in to assist two dogs with emergency spay surgeries due to pyometra. These pups were in critical condition, and thanks to generous donations and our commitment to helping pets in need, they are now on the road to recovery. Stories like these remind us how crucial spaying and neutering are—not just for preventing unexpected litters, but for saving lives.
You may remember us recently highlighting the importance of spaying and neutering, but if you'd like to learn more, check out our Tales & Tips blog! We have a special post packed with valuable insights on why this procedure is essential for your pet’s health and longevity—linked below!
Let’s keep tails wagging all April long!
How To Celebrate Canine Fitness Month
Here in Plymouth, we’re lucky to have beautiful beaches, scenic trails, and plenty of open spaces that make it easy to keep our dogs active while enjoying the great outdoors. Whether you prefer a stroll through history or an off-season beach adventure, there are endless ways to celebrate Canine Fitness Month right in our own backyard!
Stroll the Scenic Trails— Take advantage of Plymouth’s beautiful walking spots like Myles Standish State Forest, Ellisville Harbor State Park, or the Plymouth Harbor Jetty Walk. These are great places for your pup to get fresh air, stretch their legs, and enjoy new scents!
Beach Playtime— Many Plymouth beaches, like Long Beach, allow dogs during the off-season. Let your pup splash in the waves or enjoy a game of fetch on the sand before the summer crowds roll in!
Explore Dog-Friendly Parks— Places like Forge Pond Park or Forges Field Dog Park offer plenty of space for your dog to run and socialize with furry friends.
Historic Walks in Downtown Plymouth— Take a leashed stroll through town, visit the waterfront, and soak in the sights of landmarks like Plymouth Rock or Brewster Gardens. It’s a great way for both you and your pup to get some steps in!
No matter how you celebrate, the goal is simple—keep moving and have some fun with your furry friend!
How We're Helping Keep Pets Healthy This Month
At Plymouth Helping Hands for Animals, we’re celebrating Canine Fitness Month by ensuring dogs have the resources they need to stay active and healthy. Through our pet food pantry, we provide nutritious food to fuel their energy and well-being. We also assist with veterinary expenses, including urgent care and lifesaving treatments, as well as preventive care like vaccines, wellness checks, flea & tick medications, and spaying and neutering.
We encourage pet owners to prioritize their dogs’ health by staying active, feeding a balanced diet, and keeping up with routine vet care. This month is all about keeping tails wagging, and we’re here to help every step of the way!
